Camping at Round Lake State Park

/

If you live in the gorgeous neck of the woods which is northern Idaho, you’re in luck! This campground will be a normal, expected price for you! However, if you are from any other state or country, expect to pay double [thanks Idaho state government]. There seems to be a pretty strong anti-out-of-staters sentiment in Idaho lately [#overtourism?]. So, we paid $64/night for a basic campsite [hook-ups are even more]. That’s kind-of ridiculous. Yeah, I’m having to get used to inflated prices in many areas of life, but it would be nice to keep the patches of ground where you simply set up a tent reasonably priced. Oh, and if you don’t have an Idaho State Parks Passport you’ll need to pay an additional $14/night [vehicle entry fee, not included in the campsite reservation fee]. WHAT?!

Once I settled down a bit, we scoped out the lake and the dock and it wasn’t terrible. There is a dirt beach, with two docks on either side. The rest of the lake is surrounded by lily pads and other lake weeds. There are lake weeds in the swimming area too, until you go out to where the water is around 15 feet deep. The water temperature is amazing and the two docks provided a fun way to jump/dive in, play tag, launch our paddleboards, etc.

The campground DOES allow hammocking [it’s a good thing!], as long as you use hammock straps and not ropes. There are potable water spigots around, bathrooms with running water and hot showers, and most of the sites are pretty large. We did struggle with slanted ground…would you rather roll downhill sideways or slide toward the foot of your tent? We finally landed on sleeping diagonally and it wasn’t terrible. The squirrels helped clean up the crumbs we dropped after eating bread and granola…

There is a nice hiking trail that goes all the way around the lake, if you’re interested! The loop is around 1.8 miles. There is a little creek leaving the lake that might be fun for wading/dam building. We saw a great blue heron standing among the lily pads.

Round Lake State Park gets 3/5 stars from us because it is a great place to swim and play in the water, it’s not too far from the main road, there are hot showers, and we had cell service! But, of course, there were the downsides of the slanted sites and the expense. I hope this review helps you with your camping decisions!!
