My First Via Ferrata in the Red River Gorge, Kentucky

/

More recently, I’ve seen people doing Via Ferrata adventures in the Lake Tahoe region and of course, in Switzerland and other places in Europe. I have been intrigued and wanted to give it a try for sure!! I researched Via Ferrata routes in the US and most of them are affiliated with a resort (you can only participate if you’re staying the night) and are pretty cost prohibitive. This one in Kentucky is not that expensive (especially on weekend days) and very entry level!! It was the first one built in the United States and was PERFECT for my first experience!!

Thankfully, my two great friends Cheryl and Brandon were willing to try it with me!! It was SO MUCH FUN to do this with friends. 🙂 We started with the beginner courses and then worked our way into the two more advanced sections. Brandon was the only one to cross the tightrope and do the expert level!! We had such a beautiful sunny day in November for this bucket list experience!

Want to try it yourself? Check out Southeast Mountain Guides online and book the Via Ferrata! You’ll choose your entry time and then you are good to experience the different leveled courses all day (or until your arms tire out)! You should bring some kind of fingered gloves (I brought gardening gloves) because most of the time, your grip is an iron rung attached to the rock. You wouldn’t have to take your backpack with you out on the course…it’s easy to go out for a while and then come back to the picnic tables for a snack/water break.

Five stars, highly recommended!! I can’t wait to find my second Via Ferrata adventure out there!
